Slaying Dragons

The following post was shared among friends in 2012.  WildManDan has grown and our idea has morphed many times and we certainly have encountered our share of dragons.  As we get ready to open our Beercentric B&B in Afton, VA., it seems appropriate to consider the moment that put us on this path.

Our View as we Hiked the Inca Trail in Peru

"Always remember, it’s simply not an adventure worth telling if there aren't any dragons.” Sarah Ban Breathnach

It’s 9 am at about 11,000 feet and as we are hiking the Inca Trail in Peru, Wild Man Dan says “let’s open a brewery- I have found my passion in brewing and can see it as the perfect place for us as we navigate the next phase of our lives.  It’s the next perfect adventure”.  I am not sure if it was the high altitude, or the absolute clarity of mind that comes with hiking among some of the worlds most impressive mountains but the idea struck a cord in me and I eagerly agreed.

It’s 10 am at about 900 feet here back in Roanoke, Virginia.  It’s been only a few months  since the revelation that established a new direction for our lives, and many days we say out loud “What was I thinking!”  This is an extremely difficult undertaking and the exuberance of the idea has transformed into doggedness.  Creating this dream will take: singleness of purpose and passionate determination.  The list of hurdles keeps mounting and the time it takes to accomplish a single step is always longer than we predict.  We welcome you to follow along on our journey as we slay dragons.

Wild Man Dan always says: “It’s the journey, not the destination”
